Update: Your new multi-storey car park

Car park massing

As we reach the end of 2024, the new multi storey car park at Whipps Cross is really starting to take shape.

The car park foundations are now complete, and in early December the structure started to go vertical as pre-cast concrete sections manufactured by Huber in Cologne, Germany, began to arrive and be pieced together by their team.

The project is the first construction work taking place on-site and must be completed before work on the new hospital can begin. The car park will house up to 500 vehicles when completed in August and include electric vehicle charging points and accessible spaces.

Earlier this month, executives from the hospital and our lead contractor IHP (Integrated Health Projects) came together to inspect progress and last week the redevelopment team took time out to thank site colleagues, including sub-contractors Galldris, for their hard work in all weathers to keep the foundation ‘groundworks’ on time and on budget.

Through the construction of the car park, we’re also proud to be able to deliver ‘social value’ to our local communities. This work includes offering local young people the opportunity to learn more about careers in construction.

Our construction partner, IHP, has delivered 8 one-week work experience placements in construction management roles. Earlier this year they also hosted six students from Leytonstone School and provided them with the opportunity to explore various roles, ranging from a day in the life of a quantity surveyor to the responsibilities of an on-site engineer. The students also attended a presentation on digital engineering, where they learned how IT skills and artificial intelligence can be applied in construction

Throughout the construction we have regularly being sharing footage taken by drone and via a timelapse camera to track the transformation of the site. If you’ve missed it, you can look back on past footage on our YouTube channel and see more images from the build in our Future Whipps gallery.
