As 2024 comes to an end, we reflect on some of the highlights of the year, from the commencement of work on the first of two new multi-storey car parks to providing local students with opportunities to learn more about careers in the construction industry. There is much to celebrate.

Last week, staff representing services across Whipps Cross Hospital and our local communities came together to discuss the staffing and skills that will be needed in the future to deliver high quality healthcare for local people.

Whipps Cross Hospital recently switched its nitrous oxide supply to smaller cylinders, in line with calls by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, preventing the yearly wastage of up to 1,000 tonnes of CO2.

We were honoured to have Labour MP on-site at Whipps Cross Hospital as contractors progress with the groundworks phase for the first of two new multi-storey car parks, which includes improvements to drainage as part of wider plans to prevent future flooding

Construction of the first of two new multi-storey car parks is on time and on track to complete in August 2025.

Between 2019 and 2021 a first set of designs for the new hospital were created. The plans were informed by the feedback from more than 200 meetings with staff, residents, patients and community groups.

As a local resident and a consultant at the hospital, Rina has shaped and implemented new models of care during her career. She plans to use this experience to help successfully plan the new Whipps Cross.

The NHS has been working with local people and care partners to understand how end-of-life care can be improved across Waltham Forest and Redbridge. At the same time, teams in West Essex continue to evolve the delivery of services for people in areas such as Loughton, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.

Some of which include the establishment of an Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing (ACHA) that will be hosted at Whipps Cross hospital and the appointment of IHP (Integrated Health Partners) as the ‘preferred contractor’ to build the new multi-storey car park in the early autumn.

Our redevelopment director shares an update on plans to update Whipps Cross Hospital   

It was concluded that flexibility, choice, and ensuring the right support is given to parents must be central to the new department after working with parents and staff on maternity services.  

From clearing the site of the former nurses’ accommodation to securing planning permission for the new hospital and multi-storey car park, Redevelopment Director, Alastair Finney looks back at the progress made over the past 18 months.

Our maternity services at Whipps Cross Hospital were inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in August 2022. Under the new inspection system, the service retained its overall ‘good’ rating as well as gaining a ‘good’ rating for being a ‘well-led’ department. A spokesperson for the Whipps Cross Redevelopment responds after Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy asked the government for an update on the redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital. 

Redevelopment programme still waiting for information from the government’s New Hospital Programme and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) about when the funding for the new car park will be released.

Support has now been confirmed for phase two of our ‘enabling works’, which includes construction of a 500-space car park.

Barts Health NHS Trust’s planning applications for a brand new hospital at Whipps Cross and redevelopment of the wider site have been approved by the Waltham Forest Council planning committee.

The demolition of the iconic chimney marked a major milestone in the demolition works to prepare the site for the brand new hospital at Whipps Cross.

Althea Bart has been appointed to the role of Whipps Cross Hospital community participation lead. This is a new role within the hospital to lead on and strengthen our community engagement and participation in the current hospital, with a key focus on the Whipps Cross Redevelopment.

The Minister of State for Health, Ed Argar, visited the Whipps Cross site on Monday 5^th July to mark the 73^rd birthday of the NHS and to tour the demolition site for the new hospital at Whipps Cross.

In November 2020, Whipps Cross Hospital had an ambition to create a Community Forum to support a stronger relationship between the hospital and the communities it serves.

Barts Health has submitted planning applications to Waltham Forest Council for a brand new hospital at Whipps Cross and for the wider development of the site, after construction of the new hospital is completed.

Work starts shortly to remove the derelict buildings on the site where the new Whipps Cross Hospital will be built. You will start to see activity from the demolition contractor as they prepare to remove the old nurses’ accommodation.
