As 2024 comes to an end, we reflect on some of the highlights of the year, from the commencement of work on the first of two new multi-storey car parks to providing local students with opportunities to learn more about careers in the construction industry. There is much to celebrate.

Last week, staff representing services across Whipps Cross Hospital and our local communities came together to discuss the staffing and skills that will be needed in the future to deliver high quality healthcare for local people.

Whipps Cross Hospital recently switched its nitrous oxide supply to smaller cylinders, in line with calls by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, preventing the yearly wastage of up to 1,000 tonnes of CO2.

Between 2019 and 2021 a first set of designs for the new hospital were created. The plans were informed by the feedback from more than 200 meetings with staff, residents, patients and community groups.

As a local resident and a consultant at the hospital, Rina has shaped and implemented new models of care during her career. She plans to use this experience to help successfully plan the new Whipps Cross.

It was concluded that flexibility, choice, and ensuring the right support is given to parents must be central to the new department after working with parents and staff on maternity services.  

From clearing the site of the former nurses’ accommodation to securing planning permission for the new hospital and multi-storey car park, Redevelopment Director, Alastair Finney looks back at the progress made over the past 18 months.

Our maternity services at Whipps Cross Hospital were inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in August 2022. Under the new inspection system, the service retained its overall ‘good’ rating as well as gaining a ‘good’ rating for being a ‘well-led’ department. The Minister of State for Health, Ed Argar, visited the Whipps Cross site on Monday 5^th July to mark the 73^rd birthday of the NHS and to tour the demolition site for the new hospital at Whipps Cross.

In November 2020, Whipps Cross Hospital had an ambition to create a Community Forum to support a stronger relationship between the hospital and the communities it serves.

Barts Health has submitted planning applications to Waltham Forest Council for a brand new hospital at Whipps Cross and for the wider development of the site, after construction of the new hospital is completed.

Work starts shortly to remove the derelict buildings on the site where the new Whipps Cross Hospital will be built. You will start to see activity from the demolition contractor as they prepare to remove the old nurses’ accommodation.
