Response to the New Hospital Programme review

In July 2024, the government announced that as part of the wider audit of public spending a review of the national New Hospital Programme would take place.

That review has now concluded with an announcement today (20 January) by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. In his statement to the House of Commons, he set out what the conclusions of the review would mean for the national New Hospital Programme and for specific programmes, including Whipps Cross.

Schemes have been placed into ‘waves’, with Whipps Cross being placed in Wave 2 – an expectation that construction of the new hospital will begin between 2030 and 2035.

Responding to the announcement, Group Chief Executive of Barts Health NHS Trust Shane DeGaris said:

“Today’s announcement of a significant delay to the redevelopment is deeply disappointing for Whipps Cross Hospital, our staff, and the local people we serve.

“With construction already under way on the first of two new car parks, our existing planning permissions and the potential for the redevelopment to unlock up to 1,500 new homes, we believed we had a very strong case to proceed at pace with finalising our plans for a new hospital.

“With the start of construction now delayed until 2030 at the earliest, we will seek urgently to understand from national colleagues what this means for both delivery of the new Whipps Cross and for the funding of the current hospital to ensure it is fit for our wonderful staff to continue to provide the highest quality care and treatment for local people.”

Shameful delay. The residents who use Whipps X deserve better. Same old thing, Labour blames Tories, Tories blame Labour. Using AE last year showed that the hospital cannot cope as it is. Why don't politicians listen?

Like others I was disgusted at this announcement! It’s no good blaming each other. Why can’t Labour and Conservatives agree on something that is so important to us all. A wait of 12 hours or more is and never has been acceptable to people. We all deserve more. I totally support all the NHS staff as my daughter is one of them and to have to work under these conditions is soul destroying.

  3. Have been in Whipps Cross A&E says:

What's the point of The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP? If the area's own local MP - who happens to be the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care - cannot influence policy to ensure the rebuild went ahead, then there is no hope it will even be built in the 2030s. And surely Mr Streeting could have found money elsewhere in the £192 billion DHSC budget for the hospital rebuild if he really wanted. I mean, if he really really wanted it to go ahead, it would have gone ahead. Instead, we have been badly let down by the very MP who in opposition actively campaigned for the rebuild, but shelved it as soon as he got into power. You couldn't make it up. When it comes to defending his majority of 528 in Ilford North at the next election, voters will rightly be left wondering, what's the point of The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP?

It was clear from beginning that there wasn’t enough money for this. A&E delays are nothing to do with this. People attend am when they can’t get to see a GP. We have 12k patients in hospitals than can be discharged but can’t go home. Starting fixing social and primary care.

The sad fact is, Sir Epaulettes has taken command of this sinking island, where the real rulers insist on new nuclear submarines.

Streeting is more interested in privatising further, the NHS is being run down & sold off & between Starmer, Streeting & Reeves our wonderful WW1 Whipps Cross General University Hospital with its excellent, extraordinary History, it's exceptional Margaret Centre for respite & palliative end life care & Connaught Day Centre, along with many more services locally has been fought for over decades & will continue to be fought for. It is our District Hospital & we deserve, along with all the patients who may come here for A&E or maternity or clinics, to have a hospital fit for purpose. A fully funded, fully functioning, fully sustainable, from the cradle to the grave, paid for by national insurance contributions & taxes so it remains free at point of access, into the future as a Publically owned & run NHS hospital. Fight for it, write to Calvin Bailey MP, Wes Streeting MP, Keir Starmer PM & everyone you can think of because remaining silent is not an option & 2030\2035 is way too long for us to wait. The decision was wrong & needs challenging. If they can't build sooner, don't vote fot them, pressure local Councillors to pressure MPs & the PM. Let's have a local March d rally, it's long overdue. Support the incredible Action 4 Whipps Campaign group. Thank you
