Local MP Calvin Bailey gets stuck in

The redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital continues to progress as the ‘groundworks’ phase for the first of two new multi-storey car parks is underway.

Redevelopment Director Alastair Finney and Head of Infrastructure Allan Harris recently welcomed local MP Calvin Bailey on-site to witness the progress firsthand. Contractors walked him through the plans, addressing the fundamental needs of the site, including the enhancement of drainage systems. These improvements are particularly important given the history of flooding in the area, which has posed challenges to the hospital's operations in the past.

The construction of the multi-storey car parks and the new hospital is just one part of a larger redevelopment plan aimed at transforming Whipps Cross. Following Waltham Forest Council’s approval, the project will enter the next stage of transformation through the creation of a new neighbourhood, consisting of a mix of residential and retail spaces, with a large portion dedicated to affordable housing.

Alastair Finney said:, It’s more than just bricks and mortar; it’s about creating a sustainable hospital that meets the needs of its patients and staff at the heart of a new neighbourhood in northeast London.”

The visit from MP Calvin Bailey highlights the importance of this project to the local community and the government's commitment to supporting health improvements.

Alastair Finney expressed his enthusiasm for the progress, stating, “This is such an exciting time to be working on this important project. It demonstrates our commitment to creating a better environment for our patients and staff. With each step, the vision of a modernised Whipps Cross Hospital comes closer to reality.”

No doubt relief all round. Now the government can throw its support in without further hesitation - for the benefit of the local communities.

It is unfortunate that the first building(s) are to be car parks, and not clinical or medical buildings.

Those responsible for oversight , supervision, procurement and contracting must make sure that the workmanship and quality of materials are of the highest standard. I have personally seen what poor quality leads to later down the line - adding to the cost of maintenance of Estate. For example, paint peeling off - such that staff are told not to put up any signs or posters using blu-tac as paint would come off the wall, also poor quality toilet cisterns where the handles broke when people flushed them. These are just a few examples, we want hospitals that last - like the Victorian ones.

I hope that our new MP is going to ensure that the present Government aren't going to reneg on the agreement to build a new Whipps Cross Hospital and that all we are left with will be a new car park - or two.

This hospital development is more to do with Barts Health Care Trust centralising its control and power at Whitechapel. Unfortunately political ideology and corruption played a big part in the London Hospital getting the largest most expensive PFI in the country, with a 43 year agreement and an interest rate that means that £2.5m per week is paid back to Skanska and the Merchant Banks who put the money up front.
Whipps Cross was the busiest hospital in London, seeing over double what the London Hospital Whitechapel saw. It is where the Centre of Excellence should be, not in an inaccessible place in the centre of London. But unfortunately if you built Whipps Cross hospital up to a centre of Excellence, no one would bother going down to the London hospital Whitechapel. then its very existence would be under threat. But never mind the old Medical School network, Dr Darsi and the prof and Dean of the medical school made sure with their political allies in the Conservative party put this plan through. Not good for the Taxpayers or local communities. Nothing to do with the Health of society, more to do with greed, power and control.
